A Chinese door god is a decoration placed on both sides of an entry, believed to fend off evil spirits. A Tang Dynasty legends tells the story of an emperor asking his two most loyal generals (Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong) to guard his door from a ghost harassing him and causing him sleepless nights. That night, the generals guarded the door and the emperor had a blissful sleep. So, the emperor commissioned a portrait of the two men to hang on either side of his door. Qin is represented by carrying a sword; Yuchi is represented by carrying a baton.
This pot has a representation of the two men and Chinese symbols painted on it and finished off with a glaze. Each is handpainted, so each is unique and varies from piece to piece.
