The
Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo weave strips of raffia cloth (woven fibers from the raffia-palm leaves) to drape around themselves at celebrations. Our African friend brought these beauties over from his country to share them with us. Each square takes days to complete. The raffia is dyed with natural substances (like plants) and handwoven, and the designs have various meanings. We have turned these coarsely textured cloths into modern-day pillows. Each varies in size, pattern, and color.
