Our Breton Stripes Pillow Collection are 100% cotton and come in a variety of dimensions, different sized stripe options, and in both blue and white and red and white. We found the history of the Breton stripe as interesting as it is timeless. Originally a sailor's uniform, the striped shirt was useful because it helped to distinguish the sailors from the water when they were thrown overboard. At the time, the French navy hailed from Brittany, so the shirt was dubbed the "Breton," displaying twenty-one stripes, one for each of Napoleon's victories against the British. In 1917, on a trip to the French coast, iconic designer Coco Chanel was inspired by the sailors' clothing and used the idea for her nautical line. Chanel intended the Breton top for ladies to be worn with flared trousers, a revolutionary break from woman's conventional style of the time—corsets and layers of clothing—and one which presaged the major changes in women's fashion of the 1920s. Vive la France!
