Suzanis are heirloom textiles from Central Asia and are highly sought after for their eye-catching graphics. The word suzani has Persian origin and means needle, referring to the embroidered details. A tradition that has lasted for centuries, a suzani's creation starts when a family's eldest female draws the design on a large cloth. The fabric is then cut into large patches and hand-sewn by different women in the family. Sometimes they sew distinctive details into their piece to acknowledge their work, as seen in this stunning patchwork. We brought it back from India, where it was probably once used as a wall hanging, bedding, or tablecloth. Its vintage quality is evident in the aged cloth and faded embroidery, acquired over its long life and distant travels.
Our Rare Birds are unique treasures we’ve acquired from across the globe. Because they've been around for some time and are well traveled, they often have worn features. But that, of course, is what makes them so wonderful and also why we must say all sales are final.
