This trunk hails from the British Raj period, a time when the British ruled the Indian subcontinent of Raj between 1858 and 1947. During these years, Western art became more popular as Britain established schools of art in major cities, and the two cultures’ styles became intertwined. Also during this period, the direct administration of India by the British crown and the technological change ushered in by the industrial revolution meant that Britain and India became incredibly enmeshed economically. This structure led to financial instability in British-ruled Indian provinces, and they were eventually partitioned into two sovereign dominion states: the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan.
