It is said that Anduze pots originated around 1610 during the reign of Henry IV, in the Cevennes region of France in the small town of Anduze. An Anduze potter was captivated by the elegance of an Italian Medici vase on his travels, which inspired him to create the general shape for the Anduze pot. Soon, the craftsmanship and the use of terracotta spread throughout South France into the homes of aristocrats and palaces. The pots were originally designed to plant orange and lemon trees, and eventually were also used as ornamentation. Marie Antoinette even decorated the Orangerie and lined the formal gardens and terraces of Versailles with these shapely pots.
