Hippolyte Pierre Lucas (1814-1899) started work as an apprentice in the Zoological department of the Paris Museum of Natural History at the age of 13 and wrote the Histoire Naturelle des Lépidoptères d'Europe in 1835 at the age of 20. These butterflies were painted from nature by A. Noel, and this edition depicts 400 different types of butterflies.
