This piece is a classic representation of French provincial style furniture, which refers to pieces produced during the 18th century in smaller French cities and the countryside, mostly provinces like Provence, Normandy, and Bordeaux. During this time, the Parisian monarchy and court commissioned hundreds of luxurious and elaborate pieces in Rococo and Neoclassical styles. Away from the court, French provincial furniture began as a simpler and more affordable version of the luxurious pieces made for the monarchy. These pieces were created for wealthy families of the provinces who, despite having some wealth, could not afford the originals. Unfortunately, because French provincial furniture wasn't given the same the same historical importance as the original pieces, most of it has been lost to time.
