This wheel comes from the "charkha", or spinning wheel, which played a role during the Indian Independence Movement (1857–1947) during which India fought to be free from British rule. Mahatma Gandhi used this charkha to make cotton yarns and clothing and hoped that the device would help the Indian people achieve economic self-sufficiency and independence from the British textile industry. He stated that machinery had made the Indian people dependent Britain in the past, and that it was the patriotic duty of every Indian citizen to spin and his own cotton, making his own clothes. India gained their independence fully on August 15, 1947.
